Scaffolding plank is a temporary structure used to provide support during building construction, giving workers a place to stand and work. The most common scaffolding plank is wooden, but aluminum scaffolding planks are also used by some people.

There are three main types of Scaffolding plank: metal, aluminum and wood. Among the three different materials for scaffolding, metal scaffolding plank is the heaviest and most durable option, and it is also the most expensive. Aluminum scaffolding plank is slightly lighter than metal scaffolding plank, but is not as strong or weather-resistant as metal scaffolding plank. Wooden scaffolding planks are the lightest and cheapest option, but are also the most fragile.

Metal Scaffolding Plank

The two most common types of metal scaffolding planks are:

Steel scaffolding plank offer excellent strength and durability.

Aluminum scaffolding plank are lightweight and low cost.

Steel Scaffolding Plank

Steel scaffolding planks are typically made of Q195 or Q235 steel, but other steel materials can be selected according to customer requirements. These steel planks are fire-resistant, slip-resistant, and corrosion-resistant, and their surface is treated with hot-dip galvanizing or pre-galvanizing to meet the needs of various construction projects. All our scaffolding planks meet standards such as EN12811, EN1004, and AS/NZS1577.

Steel scaffolding planks are available in non-hook and hook versions. Hook scaffolding planks can be directly connected to the scaffolding system's ledger without any accessories. Non-hook scaffolding planks require the use of board retaining couplers.

Common steel scaffolding plank widths are 210 mm, 225 mm, 230 mm, 240 mm, 250 mm, 300 mm, 320 mm, 450 mm, and 500 mm.

Aluminum Scaffolding Plank

Aluminum scaffolding planks are lightweight, fire-resistant, slip-resistant, and corrosion-resistant, making them compatible with common scaffolding systems and compliant with ANSI, CSA, and OSHA standards. A protective oxide layer naturally forms on the surface of aluminum scaffolding planks, preventing corrosion and allowing them to be used in various environments. Lighter than steel planks, aluminum planks are easier to handle and transport.

Featuring reinforced hooks, slip-resistant panels, and a torsion-resistant design, aluminum scaffolding planks provide a stable, slip-resistant working platform for construction, maintenance, and industrial applications. They are versatile and suitable for maintenance and repair work in various indoor and outdoor construction projects.

Common aluminum scaffolding plank sizes: 19 inches wide, 7 feet, 8 feet, and 10 feet long.

Nowadays, scaffolding manufacturers will drill holes on the surface of the scaffolding plank during the production process, which can increase the friction on the surface of the metal scaffolding plank, make workers stand more smoothly and safely on the surface of the metal scaffolding plank, and reduce the occurrence of accidents.

wooden scaffolding plank

Wooden Scaffolding Plank

The wood used for scaffolding walk boards is not the same grade as the wood used for construction projects. The material must have more than 6 rings per inch, have few surface and structural defects, and, in the case of Southern pine, have the grain slope one inch sideways for every 14 inches of length. Additionally, it must be inspected, graded, and labeled by a certified, independent third-party organization.

The two most commonly used types of wooden scaffolding plank are:

Solid sawn planks. Solid sawn scaffolding boards are typically made from Southern pine, but can also be made from Douglas fir or other similar species.

Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) boards.  LVL scaffolding plank are made from thin layers of wood and are bonded together using exterior grade adhesives.

After the scaffolding manufacturer solved the problem of smooth surface of metal scaffolding plank, all three types of scaffolding are very safe for users. You can choose what material of scaffolding plank to use according to your own needs.
